In Wisconsin and throughout the Great Lakes region, the classic Scandinavian fish boil is a treasured tradition that's part spectacular showmanship and all good food.

Historically, fish boils were held to feed big crowds. Today they can be hard to find, but those who seek them out know that when they do they're likely to find friendly people and good food.

The Three Lakes Historical Society will continue its traditional Independence Day weekend fish boil this year on the museum grounds adjacent to the Edward U. Demmer Memorial Library at 1798 Huron Street on Saturday, July 7, organizers announced in a press release.

The Sprecher Beer Garden will open at 4 p.m. and will continue serving Sprecher tap beer, wine, soda, and water until 8 p.m. Food will be served from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The menu will include fish, boiled red potatoes, onions, carrots, coleslaw, a roll, homemade desserts, and a variety of beverages. Entertainment will be provided by Anthony Lux and David Walters. Lux is a well-known, outstanding keyboard musician who covers crowd favorites and adds his own original music to the mix, according to the press release.

Walters hails from the Northwoods and is known for a diverse repertoire spanning several genres and styles ranging from contemporary to favorite oldies, the release states.

Advanced tickets can be purchased from the museum's website at www.threelakesmuseum.org or at the museum - $15 for adults or $10 for hungry souls age 5-11. If you can pass for under 5, you can eat for free. Adult tickets purchased at the door will cost $20.

This is the Society's most important annual fundraiser and is a great way to introduce yourself to the luxury of a traditional fish boil and the Three Lakes Historical Society and its outstanding museum, the release states.

"The Society is looking forward to welcoming visitors as we celebrate one of the tastiest of all northern traditions," the release notes.

The Three Lakes Historical Museum was founded in 1981 and the Three Lakes Historical Society in 1984. The Johnson house, the oldest known dwelling in Three Lakes, has been the museum's home since 1982. The addition of numerous buildings and exhibits help trace the history of the Three Lakes area.

Currently, the Society is raising money to fund its planned expansion into space that will be created during the current major remodeling project at the neighboring Edward U. Demmer Library. That expansion will give the public greater access to the Society's materials, create a permanent workspace for the museum staff, and offer a climate-controlled archival storage area that will help protect the Society's important asset, the release states.

"Completion of this project will mark a milestone in the Society's ongoing evolution. It represents a new partnership that will allow the Society to share its historical assets with the resources currently housed in the Demmer Library's Local History Room," said Society president Bill Hayes.

"Our goal is to raise $100,000 to build a year-round home for our past and to meet our commitment to the Demmer Library's expansion project," he added.

The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. After Sept. 1 and through Oct. 13, the museum will adopt reduced fall hours and be open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. For more information, visit www.threelakesmuseum.org.
