The Rhinelander/Antigo girls' hockey team simply had no answer for Annika Horman Tuesday evening.

The Appleton United skater scored six goals - including four in the first period - as United defeat the Northern Edge 8-2 at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.

Horman, who entered the night tied for eighth in the state with 23 goals scored, routinely skated around the Edge in the contest.

"She was highlighted in our pregame speech to the team. We did a poor job taking her off the puck. In girls' hockey, you're not allowed to check, per se, but you are allowed to make plenty of contact. We didn't do that at all," Northern Edge coach Kevin Sandstrom said. "We lined up with the puck instead of with the shooter. We had everyone out there hacking and slashing away at the puck. You have a girl like Horman who can stickhandle (and) you miss the puck, you miss the player and she's right around you. We gave her high-quality chances and a player like that's going to bury them."

Horman's barrage included a pair of goals 20 seconds apart midway through the first period that gave United a 3-0 lead. She tacked on one more at the 12-minute mark that put Appleton up 4-0.

Goals by Kourtney Koster and Horman made it 6-0 for United in the second before the Edge finally got on the board with a shot from the point by senior defender Ellen Padgett.

Despite the loss, there was one bright spot for the Northern Edge on senior night at the RIA. Antigo senior Gracie Lenzner scored her first career goal on a power play with less than six seconds remaining in the contest, tipping in a shot by Madi Losch.

"I can't say enough about her hard work," Sandstrom said of Lenzner. "She's not the most orthodox player, I think everyone could see that, but you're never going to outwork her. You're never going to out-hustle her.

"It's rare you can lose a game 8-2 and find a moment as awesome as any moment as we've had all season."

United outshot the Northern Edge 45-21 in the contest. Alicia Turunen made 37 saves in defeat.

The Edge will close out the regular season with three Great Northern Conference contest, needing to run the table to steal its first conference title. Rhinelander/Antigo takes on Lakeland/Tomahawk tonight in Antigo, again next Tuesday in Rhinelander and faces Northland Pines in Antigo Feb. 12. The Edge is a combined 0-3-1 against those two teams so far this season.

"I think we're capable of changing that," Sandstrom said. "We're going to need more out of Turunen, more out of Madi - the players we've been leaning on all year - more out of Payton (Bunnell) ... Hopefully we come Thursday night ready to play against Lakeland. It should be a fun one in Antigo."
