ANTIGO - Lightning struck twice Saturday at the Langlade County Multi-Purpose Building.

The Lakeshore Lightning co-op used quick three-goal scoring barrages in both the second and third periods to down the Rhinelander/Antigo girls' hockey team 6-3 in a non-conference contest.

Kila Paljakka recorded a hat-trick for the Cedarburg-based co-op of eight schools as Lakeshore struck quickly every time it appeared the Northern Edge was gaining momentum in the contest.

"We did gain momentum for long period of times in this game. I don't think 6-3 is indicative of our play in this game," Edge coach Kevin Sandstrom said afterward.

Madi Losch scored early in the third period to bring Rhinelander/Antigo within 3-2, but any momentum the Edge had was quickly squashed as Lauren Waraksa scored 22 seconds later to restore a two-goal Lakeshore lead at the 4:20 mark. Alex Buchanan scored about three minutes later and Paljakka recorded her third goal on a power play a short time after that as the Lightning put the contest out of reach.

It was a similar story in the second period as Lakeshore jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Edge spent the majority of the first five minutes in the Lightning zone, but then Paljakka got free on a breakaway and eventually scored in a scramble in front of the Edge net. Breanna Pfaff then scored on a shot from the point 17 seconds later and Paljakka scored the Lightning's third goal in a 1 minute, 38 second stretch, to give Lakeshore a commanding lead.

"Things unraveled for about two minutes. That's all it was," Sandstrom said. "I think you see that first one go in when you're playing with a new goalie in net and everybody's like, 'Oh no. Here we go.' We came back on the next shift and allowed a second goal, and then a third right after that."

Freshman Nevaeh Forster made only her second start of season in goal for the Edge as sophomore Alicia Turunen was a scratch from the contest due to a prior commitment. Forster stopped all eight shots she faced in the first period and made 27 saves overall.

"I think there are a couple Nevaeh wants back. I think there are a couple our defense maybe wants to play a little differently. And there were a few saves that Nevaeh made that were definitely stellar," Sandstrom said. "You can tell she's played goalie before. She hasn't put goalie pads on since November until yesterday at practice."

Ashley Adams got the Edge on the board at the 10:37 mark of the second with a one-timer from the low slot off a Kourtney Carrico pass.

"Real nice cycle, we were able to put it behind the net, then out to Ashley and boom. The wind was right back in our sails and I think we controlled the rest of the second," Sandstrom said. "We had a good enthusiasm going in (to the third)."

That momentum led to Losch's breakaway goal early in the third. She tacked on one more goal with 1:38 to play. She also committed two penalties for body checking after the Edge fell behind 5-2 in the third. The second led to Paljakka's power play goal.

The Edge was outshot 33-21 in the loss.

Rhinelander/Antigo (7-11-1) hosts Appleton United tonight at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
