Swim Club season reaches 'crescendo' at Freezin' Season Invite
The meet is one that the swimmers look forward to each year. Instead of
regular relays, they have mixed relays in which boys and girls can be together on one team. The crescendo relay is another added event to this meet where six boys and six girls on each relay team swim a progression of yardage with the winning team in both a male/female category receiving trophies.
Rhinelander swept the crescendo relays with the group of Ella Miljevich, Ella Heck, Emma Houg, Abi Winnicki, Lisa Kennedy and Makenna Winnicki winning the girls' race. The Hodag sextet of Charlie Antonuk, Drayke Arrowood, Samson Shinners, Charlie Heck, Daniel Gillingham and Jack Antonuk won the boys' race.
There is always a competition between the RSC boys relay and girls relay to see who gets a better time.
"It was so fun to watch the crescendo relay at the very end of the meet," RSC coach Megan Cihla said. The girls team really wanted to beat the boys but the boys weren't going to have it. Both Daniel Gillingham and Jack Antonuk had lifetime personal bests on their leg of the relay, because they weren't going to let the girls win. Overall, it was just a great race to watch."
Jack Antonuk posted a state-qualifying time during the meet, he swam the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 10.2 seconds on his way to victory in his age group.
Several RSC swimmers posted time drops, led by Daniel Gillingham, who recorded a 30-plus second time drop in an event. Ella Cordy, Caleb Luce and Samson Shinners posted 20-plus second drops; Claire Caselton, Mia Gillingham, Sadie Houghton, Max Miljevich and Austen Slette posted 15-plus second drops; Eli Lundt, Sarah Marshall, Kiley Pooch, Olin Slette posted drops of 10 seconds or better and Anthony Barrett, Alexandra Dornfeld, Augusta Gruett, Emma Houg, Abigale Johnson, Elliot King, Elena Larson, Evelyn Simonsen, Kelsey Yunkers posted five-plus second time drops.
"As a whole, all of the RSC swimmers have been really motivated and working hard on what we've been doing in practice," Cihla said. "Our divisional meet is just two weeks away and they are showing the drive and determination to take home the champion title for another year."
The club will compete in Tomahawk this Saturday before hosting the Eastern Divisional Championship meet Jan. 27 and 28.
