The GFWC-Rhinelander Woman's Club recently made two new friends: Mark Naniot, director of Wildlife Rehabilitation at Wild Instincts, and his buddy Whisk, a barred owl. Since 1996, Mark and his wife Sharon Larson have been responsible for the care and treatment of over 15,000 wild animals representing over 100 different species. The couple works 365 days a year to mend orphaned and injured wildlife, preparing them for release into the wild. At left, club president Kay Salewske is shown greeting Whisk and wondering about owl's ears. Funding for Wild Instincts comes entirely through donations. It does not give tours, but Naniot does do presentations at schools and for groups like GFWC-Rhinelander Woman's Club. The food bills and medication costs are amazing so club members were happy to help the animals with a monetary donation, according to a club press release. At right, club member Rosemary Cameron presents a check to Naniot. For more information, visit www.wildinstinctsrehab.com.
