The Country Cat World Championship Snowmobile Derby has endured 55 years of the best snowmobile racers in the world competing for the title of "World Champion." Held in Eagle River, known as the "Snowmobile Capital of the World," this event is the largest winter sports event in the Midwest.

What started as a little local event on Dollar Lake 55 years ago has evolved into a national event with a state-of-the-art facility, organizers said in a press release. Surrounding the half-mile ice oval track and sno cross course are 14 corporate suites, indoor hot seats for spectators, and a 10,000-square foot heated Expo Hall with an upstairs Loft Bar with 10 flat-screen TVs that live stream the race.

"The people of this community who take so much pride in this race and who work long, hard hours to make it happen are why this event has become so big and so important to Eagle River," the release states. "The Boy Scouts and local youth group work the food and gate admissions to raise money for their club and the Derby Track is grateful for their many years of volunteering."

This world class event hosts racers from coast to coast as well as many Canadian provinces and countries such as Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Japan and Russia.

The Country Cat Vintage World Championship Snowmobile Derby, presented by Portesi, will be held this weekend, Jan. 12-14. The Country Cat World Championship Snowmobile Derby is set for next weekend, Jan. 18-21.
