Bell ringers collect over $32,000 for Salvation Army

For nearly a month leading up to Christmas, the sound of the Salvation Army's iconic bells carried in the crisp winter air as generous people donated their time and money to the cause.

This year's goal was $40,000, however the organization announced Wednesday its current total is $32,903.23. A few corporate donations are still outstanding so the final total is expected to increase.

"While we are short of our $40,000 goal, we are very grateful for the community's support," Kim Swisher, 2017 Kettle Campaign coordinator, said in a press release.

"Each year, I am reminded how very generous and truly caring our community really is. Thank you to everyone who rang the bell and to all who donated."

Ringing at Shopko and Trig's began Nov. 17 and at Walmart starting Nov. 24. Bell ringing wrapped up Dec. 23.

Trig's and Walmart offered 305 shifts and filled approximately 171 shifts, or 56 percent.

"I say 'approximately' as we had several volunteers, including Jan and Jim Leschke, Tom Jerow and Tom Doyle who frequently filled open shifts as they saw the need," Swisher said. "These folks are long-time volunteers with the Rhinelander Salvation Army and take care of the bell ringing operations."

There were 87 volunteers and organizations that braved the cold to ring for the cause this holiday season.

"It was incredible to see individuals, families, co-workers and friends ringing throughout the community," Swisher said. "Their generosity of time and energy was inspiring, and we are very grateful."

This is the only time of year the Salvation Army holds a fundraising campaign. Of every dollar donated, $0.86 stays in Rhinelander, with the remaining $0.14 going to the state and national emergency relief efforts.

The Rhinelander Salvation Army serves residents by providing emergency assistance with housing, transportation and medical needs. Housing services may include temporary shelter, emergency utility and rent assistance. Transportation assistance can include gas cards or assistance with repairs. Medical assistance often includes help with life-saving prescription medications.

Donations are managed by the Rhinelander Area Churches for Emergency Services (ACES).

Churches that are part of ACES includes Calvary Baptist, First Congregational UCC, First United Methodist, Grace Foursquare, Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Nativity of Our Lord, North Country Vineyard Church and Trinity Lutheran.

People can still make donations to the Salvation Army by sending a check to P.O. Box 1081 in Rhinelander.
