Nicolet announces audition schedule for 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'

The Nicolet Players will hold auditions for one of Shakespeare's most beloved plays "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at 7 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, March 5 and 6 in the Nicolet College Theatre.

"Considered to be one of Shakespeare's most famous romantic comedies, it features four stories woven together into one crazy, fantasy-filled night," according to a Nicolet press release. "The play is filled with humans and fairies, magic and love, ornate costumes and makeup, and all of it is performed in Shakespeare's original language."

"Acting Shakespeare can be intimidating at first, but once you get accustomed to the language, you'll see why his plays are so exciting to perform," said Jim Nuttall, the director of the play. "We'll start out slow just to understand the meaning of the lines, and then we get better and better as we rehearse. We'll follow the same pattern at auditions."

There are 21 roles in all (8-13 men and 8-13 women). Half the parts are for younger actors (teens to 20s), and the other half are for older actors ages 30-70. "Shakespeare tended to favor male actor parts, but this play could be cast evenly with half female and half male roles," Nuttall said. The final cast will mix together high school ages with adults.

"The play breaks down very well into different groups, so just about everyone will have nights off as we rehearse other scenes with other characters. We'll rehearse most weeknights mid-March through early May," Nuttall said. Public performances are scheduled for May 4-6 and May 10-13.

As always, everyone is welcome to audition; you do not need to be a Nicolet student or have any previous experience in acting to be in the cast. The auditions will consist of cold readings from short sections of the script, repeated several times until all auditioning have had several chances to read. No preparation is necessary for the auditions, but according to Nuttall, people who have read the script beforehand have an increased comfort level reading lines at auditions.

"The best way to prepare is to visit the Upcoming Auditions link at www.nicoletlive.

com. There is detailed information about auditions, links to the script, as well as copies of selected scenes we will be reading on audition nights," Nuttall said. For more information about the play or auditions, contact Nuttall at (715) 365-4466 or by e-mail [email protected].
