The Hodags finished fifth in the 11-team girls' standings and seventh in the 13-team boys' standings.
A trio of eighth graders led the Hodag girls' standings. Anna Wood was 15th overall with a combined, two-day time of 31 minutes, 35.7 seconds. Liana Teter was 24th (33:40.7) and Megan Lester was 25th (33.44.1). All three posted top-20 times in Sunday's freestyle race.
On the boys' side, seventh-grader Jett Biolo was 21st (28:07.4), followed by a pair of eighth graders, Kyle Morien (24th, 28:13.8) and Will Rutkowski (30th, 28:53.5)
"First time this team has had a top-20 pursuit finisher and in the individual skate and classic races," coach Jim Wood said. "We had a number of girls in the top 20 and several boys in the top 30. Overall a great performance for this group of middle school skiers."
The Hodag girls had three other top-40 finishers with fifth grader Macy Lester in 34th, seventh grader Juliana Smith in 36th and sixth grader Nora Rutkowski in 38th.
Callie Threlkeld, who only competed on Sunday, posted the 21st-fastest time in the freestyle competition.
Andrew Henrichs (61st), Travis White (63rd) and Ryan Morien (66th) were the next three finishers for the Hodag boys. In all, Rhinelander had 21 skiers take part in the middle school state races.
"I am impressed with his group of young Nordic skiers," Wood said. "Sunday's skate-style race was held in low single digit weather and the kids gave it all they had. They not only battled the field of other skiers, but the cold temperatures put another obstacle in an already challenging endurance sport. I am so proud of these athletes and the parents that get them to practice and competitions."
Lakeland took the middle school girls' title while Peak Nordic claimed the middle school boys' title.
