Howard Young Medical Center completes successful trauma classification review
Staff from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reviewed the hospital in a recent on-site visit and their summary report commended the facility along with its clinicians and associates as a cohesive community focused hospital providing great injury prevention services for the Lakeland community, according to an HYMC press release.
"The reviewers also praised Howard Young Medical Center for its full engagement with local Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers," the release states. "They also took notice of the recent Emergency Department remodeling project as a significant improvement to patient care along with the use of motorized carts to provide safe transport from the helicopter landing area and the use of Lucas Compression devices for cardiac emergencies. Innovative programs like the Northwoods Regional Special Event Bike Medic Team which provides medical coverage at large scale events drew high praise."
"Providing high quality trauma care is a true team effort and demonstrates the ability of our facility and local EMS partners to provide this level of care to people in our area when they need it most," said Dr. Molly Pilarski, Medical Director of Trauma Services at Howard Young Medical Center.
Wisconsin's integrated system of trauma identifies hospitals as trauma care facilities by using four levels, the release states.
This system recognizes that all hospitals in Wisconsin play a critical role in providing optimal treatment to the injured patient.
"It is imperative that patients are delivered in a timely manner to the closest appropriate hospital matching resources to the needs of the severely injured patient," said Dr. Roderick Brodhead, Medical Director of Emergency Services, Howard Young Medical Center.
The primary role of a Level III Trauma Hospital is to provide assessment, resuscitation, stabilization, and emergency surgery and arranges transfer to a Level I or II facility for definitive surgical and intensive care as necessary. Howard Young's Level III classification represents excellence in trauma care and is good for three-years, the release states.
"Our Emergency department clinicians and associates as well as paramedic level Emergency Medical Transport professionals complete additional training and certifications in emergency medicine and trauma care to support the care and treatment of trauma patients," said Laurie Oungst, Chief Operating Officer, Howard Young Medical Center. "This level of training in adult and pediatric trauma areas is something we take considerable pride in and we congratulate our entire team for this accomplishment."
