Madi Losch recorded a hat trick and had a hand in all seven goals as the Northern Edge pulled away to a 7-2 victory over the Raiders Thursday night at the Langlade County Multi-Purpose Building in Antigo.
After Medford tied the game with a power play goal 23 seconds into the second period, the Edge took control, scoring four unanswered goals and six of the next seven overall.
"We played a lot faster hockey in the second and third period and it went well for us. We started putting some pucks away," Edge coach Tom Roeser said.
It was the Edge's second win of the season, both coming against the Raiders. This one was a lot more lopsided than the first contest, which the Edge won 4-3 back on Nov. 19.
"I think the main difference was not skating into traffic," Roeser said. "The scoresheet will show that because we did not give up the shots we gave up last time we saw them. We took the zone a lot more. That was the biggest thing. We started skating away from traffic and taking the zone. We've been working a lot on that in practice."
Losch had a big game for the Northern Edge. She assisted on the team's first four goals, and then scored the team's final three goals of the contest.
"Madi Losch, she played a different game," Roeser said. "She was one of the ones we were struggling with (because) she likes to go up the middle and neutral ice. She started carrying the puck a lot more wide, using her speed and their defensemen had a hard time handling her when she's going full blast."
The Edge got forward Jade Forster back in the lineup after being unavailable for the first three games. She provided a spark adding two goals and a pair of assists in the win.
"I bet you she took probably a third of our shots," Roeser said. "She was all over the rink tonight. When the puck was on her stick it stayed on her stick and she had a lot more opportunities than what the scoresheet even showed."
Emily Kassler put the Edge on the board 14:02 into the first period on a power play, a lead that stood until Medford's leading scorer, Emily Schafer, tied it with the skater advantage early in the second.
Lauren Kefalinos restored the Edge's lead on the power play 8:30 into the second and Forster scored her first of two goals at the 11:17 mark to give Rhinelander/Antigo a 3-1 lead after two periods.
Forster scored again 57 seconds into the third and Losch scored her first goal to make it 5-1 at the 3:02 mark. A Ryley Koski goal brought Medford back to within 5-2 with 7:41 remaining, but Losch scored twice in the final 3:10 of the contest to account for the final margin.
The Edge outshot Medford 47-21 in the contest. Alicia Turunen made 19 saves in the win. The Edge also cashed in on seven Medford penalties in the contest, scoring three times on the power play.
"I think the girls are seeing that when we start moving our feet teams will take penalties against us," Roeser said. "That's kind of how we take penalties too, when teams are moving their feet and we're not moving our feet we start reaching. That's what happened (for Medford) tonight. Jade drew the majority of those penalties because she was always moving her feet."
The Northern Edge travels to Lakeland/Tomahawk this Friday.
