Dozens of homemade holiday cookies will be available for purchase by the pound at the ArtStart building from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 and Sunday, Dec. 16 as part of a fundraiser to benefit local chef Stephanie Kaether.

According to a press release announcing the fundraiser, Kaether was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2017.

"The original diagnosis was Stage 1, however that diagnosis changed after finding cancer in her lymph nodes as well, causing the diagnosis to increase to Stage 2 B/Stage 3," the release states. "She then underwent two different series of chemotherapy, and over 30 sessions of radiation. She pushed through all her treatments while assisting in the opening of her sister's restaurant (The Historic Davenport House) as well as being a single mom of two children, Emma and Max. Chef Stephanie experienced many side effects during her treatments, which she is still experiencing some of them. She is a strong advocate for early detection from mammograms, and believes the recommended age for yearly mammograms (should) be lowered to begin in a person's 30s or early 40s. If she hadn't gone in for her second mammogram at the age of 42, she believes it would not have been detected for a while, allowing the cancer to grow and spread to other areas. Kaether also feels more should be known about the lasting effects of a cancer diagnosis. She thinks there is a misconception that when people complete their cancer treatments, they are suddenly 'healed' and can return to 'normal' life. It has been 6 months since she has completed her treatments, and she still struggles with fatigue, lymphedema, chemo brain, depression, and many other ailments, while also combating the financial devastation that comes with cancer."

After a holding a successful "Pies with a Purpose" fundraiser earlier this year, Kaether's family and friends decided to organize another benefit sale, the release states.

Along with the various holiday cookies, Kaether's children will be selling gourmet hot chocolate, while Kaether will have a separate table featuring vegan, gluten-free, and nut-free baked goods, the release states. All proceeds collected during Cookies For A Cause will go to Kaether and her children.

"Being in the media is not something new for Chef Stephanie Kaether (Culley)," the release notes. "You may remember her story in the spring of 2012, when she won a national recipe contest called Italian Inspiration, where she won a trip to Italy and $10,000. She has been an active participant and award winner in many other recipe and cooking contests since. She is currently a chef at The Historic Davenport House, owned by her sister Christine Culley. While attending the Culinary Arts Program at Nicolet College, Chef Stephanie was awarded the Culinary Community Commitment award, for her willingness to always be on board and offer her time and cooking skills to any charity, fundraiser, or person in need. Her friends and family are now asking for the community's help to give a little back to get this family back on their feet."

Donations of homemade cookies and baked goods can dropped off at the Art Start building in Rhinelander between 10:30 a.m. and noon on Dec. 15 and 16.

"We are looking forward to another successful fundraiser, and hope the community will show their support for this 'one tough cookie,' while adding a little sweetness to their holiday shopping lists!" the release states.
