Variety defines Nicolet Live! performance schedule
If there's a theme that runs through the season it's the sheer variety of performances, Nicolet College Theatre Director Jim Nuttall said in a press release announcing the upcoming performances.
"There's everything from the popular a cappella group the UW MadHatters, the comedy of Heywood Banks, a theater show just for kids, and a really interesting ensemble that tells the story of famed naturalist John Muir," Nuttall said.
"With the broad range of performers there really is something for everyone."
The season kicks off Friday, Sept. 14, with a classical music concert by UW-Madison's Pro Arte String Quartet at 7:30 p.m. in the Nicolet College Theatre.
Playing old and new classical music, the world-renowned ensemble is noted for its abundance of emotion and energy. The San Francisco Chronicle hailed the group as "one of the greatest quartets of our time."
Tickets are $15, with all tickets for performances in the series available for purchase at nicoletcollege.edu or (715) 365-4646. Concessions including beer and wine will be available for purchase prior to most events. All performances are at 7:30 p.m. in the Nicolet College Theatre unless otherwise noted

• Backtrack, a five-person a cappella group from New Your City, Friday, Sept. 28.
A YouTube sensation with performances at Carnegie Hall, the group infuses heart and humor into every show and pushes the limits of a cappella by creating impressive covers of past and present pop music, writing inspiring original compositions, and daring to take on unexpected genres such as classical and electronic music. $15.
• Dr. Zorba Paster, National Public Radio host, university professor, practicing family physician, and one of the Dalai Lama's personal physicians, Sunday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. His presentation will be based on his book, The Longevity Code: Your personal prescription for a longer, sweeter life. He touches on five spheres that impact a person's life - physical, mental, social, spiritual, and material. This event is free.
• Nicolet Players present the comedy "Over the River and Through the Woods" Nov. 2 to 4 and Nov. 8 to 11. Sunday performances are at 2 p.m. The off-broadway hit swirls around carefree Nick, a single, Italian-American guy from New Jersey. When his parents retire to Florida, Nick settles into the routine of staying close to family by having dinner every Sunday with his grandparents. Then one day the company he works for offers him his dream job as a marketing executive. The catch: it's across the country in Seattle. "This is when things get crazy and comedy ensues," Nuttall said. Tickets are $10 general public and $8 for students and seniors.
• Mick Sterling's At Christmas, a unique blend of family-fueled comedy and drama, Friday, Dec. 7. With a six-piece band from the Twin Cities, the performance is like being in your own living room with stories that happened in your own family. The 90-minute show is a reflection of what the holidays are - funny, poignant, and heartwarmingly tender. $15.
• ArtsPower presents the children's theater production "Amber Brown is Not a Crayon" Saturday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m. ArtsPower's uniquely funny and forthright musical portrays a feisty young girl who refuses to let her problems get the better of her. You'll laugh and cry with Amber as she learns some valuable lessons about the virtues of patience and the meaning of forgiveness. Suggested for children in grades 1 through 4. $8 general public, $6 students and seniors.
• The UW Madhatters are back Saturday, March 2! With their unmistakable talent and signature Badger-red blazers, these goofy guys will wow you with another tour de force a cappella performance. Nowhere will you see so many good-looking guys singing in perfect harmony with such high-spirited humor. $15.
• The National Players theater troupe presents "Around the World in 80 Days" Friday, March 15. Unpredictable adventure awaits in this Jules Vern classic as professional actors travel by boat, train, and elephants as they take part in brash duels, daring rescues, and unexpected romance. $15.
• The Chance Ensemble plays out John Muir - University of the Wilderness Saturday, March 30. Experience the best of John Muir's life and legacy through his own writings and the creative reconstruction of his journey through original musical composition and a voice, cello, and violin performance. Narrated by Norman Gilliland of Wisconsin Public Radio. $15.
• Nicolet Players present "The Crucible" May 3-5 and May 9-12.
The Village of Salem is running wild with tales of witchcraft. Deep-seated jealousies, lust, and greed are bubbling to the surface from the heat of each neighbor's exaggerated accusations. Revenge has replaced reason in this play by famed American playwright Arthur Miller. $8 general public, $6 students and seniors.
• The eclectic and high-entertaining comedian Heywood Banks performs Saturday, June 8. This singing comedic virtuoso is a cult hero and a pop icon, with a show that appeals to college students, yuppies, business folk, country folk, kids, and seniors. $18.
