Ascension upgrades MRI technology at HYMC and Eagle River
The addition of a high field, wide bore, 1.5T MRI scanning system from GE Healthcare is now in service at Howard Young Medical Center. The GE MRI system integrates the newest patient-friendly features of a wider bore and a wider couch with a higher tolerance for weight, the release states.
"Ascension has teamed with Shared Medical Services to bring this upgrade to the Northwoods," the release states. "Operated on a specially designed trailer unit, the portable unit provides access to MRI services two days a week at each location."
MRI is a non-invasive procedure used to create detailed images of the soft-tissue, organs and vessels of the body. Two-dimensional images are obtained utilizing a combination of a strong magnetic field, radio waves and a computer. MRI does not use radiation and there are no known harmful effects.
"The GE system has the capabilities of imaging in any direction, which provides important new perspectives of structures previously viewed in only one dimension," Howard Young Medical Center radiology supervisor Eric McKinney said. "MRI provides greater image contrast to aid in the distinction of tissues - for example the gray and white matter in the brain - that is impossible with other forms of imaging."
Using MRI, radiologists and physicians may be able to make earlier diagnoses of a variety of medical conditions including, but not limited to, brain and nervous system disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, and organ diseases. Earlier detection can lead to better treatment and recovery as well as overall reduced cost.
"This upgrade complements and extends the range of quality diagnostic services already available," Sandy Anderson, president of Howard Young Medical Center and Ascension Eagle River Hospital, said. "The availability of quality and accessible imaging services is something our clinicians, associates and community depends on."
