The annual fire department picnic included a number of games and activities for children, including balloon popping and face painting, as well as an opportunity to plunge Rhinelander Police Chief Lloyd Gauthier into a dunk tank.
Carol Madura and her husband were just passing by the Newbold Town Hall when they felt compelled to stop. She was impressed with the large turnout and the community's support for the fire department.
"They need the help, they have to have the resources to do (their job)," she said.
Bruce Hilstrom has attended the picnic at least six times. He used to vacation in Newbold and now he lives there. He has a background as a fire rescue dispatcher in another area and was happy to help support the Newbold department.
"I think it's excellent, I really do," he said. "I think it's a combination of several factors, one is the fact it's a nice way to bring the rural community together along with a lot of visitors."
Newbold Department Fire Chief Mark Fetzer reported a large turnout and steady foot traffic throughout the day.
This event typically raises between $4,000 and 7,000, he said, noting that nearly $10,000 was raised last year, including direct donations and donations prior to the fundraiser.
"We generally buy specific items that we choose to fund with the fundraiser money outside the tax money," he explained.
ATVs and a drone used for search and rescue were purchased from fundraiser money, according to Fetzer.
"We've always had good support at the picnic and people have come and participated so we enjoy it a lot," he said.
