According to the counters at the gates, over 12,500 people attended the fair while the counters were present. The counters were not present at each entrance at all times, so it's likely the actual attendance was somewhat higher, he added.
County board member Jim Winkler, who serves on the UW-Extension committee and is also on the fair committee, said he heard positive comments about the fair from three other county board members, including Billy Fried and Scott Holewinski. He also noted the fairgrounds were very crowded when the sun was out and attendance at the entertainment venues was up as well.
"People loved the variety," Barnett said. "So many people told me, this is what they've been looking for. I had so many positive reports from different members of the community."
One concern mentioned by Barnett is the lack of a place to store the trolleys over the winter. The trolleys, he said, could not return to their River Street storage location due to a renovation project there.
Winkler said the trolleys have to be out of the River Street facilities by Sept. 10.
"We are frantically looking for a place to story the trolleys, under a roof so they don't rust out," Winkler said. "That brought up another thing we will be looking at in the near future, and that would be capital improvements. We proposed, it would be nice if we had more storage at the fair."
A suggestion was made to look for bids for another 20-by-40 foot storage addition, to keep all of the fair's pieces in one place. This, Winkler said, would provide a more permanent solution to the space issues.
Barnett and Winkler also asked the committee to bring forward any other suggestions they might have as well.
