Chris Skowronski has good luck with Northwoods smallmouth
"Fish right now are in their typical summer patterns," Skowronski said. "They can be caught shallow, too, but they'll be found offshore for the most part now." His go-to bait depends on conditions, he explained so it is difficult for him to choose just one bait. He said he tends to let the fish tell him what they want, but his favorite way to catch them is on a top water lure or a jig in the spring. When looking for fish, he utilizes his electronics to find structure, as well as the fish themselves.
"Typically, you will find fish holding on something common around the lake depending on the time of year, time of day and weather," he said. He also cautioned that not every fish in a lake, or a section of a lake, will always be on the same pattern. He tries to keep an open mind and look for more than one pattern around the lake.
"I recommend a good map chip," he said of attempting to learn a new lake. "A good map chip will show lake contour lines. The technology we have today is amazing. You figure out how to use it, read the contour lines, interpret the side imaging and down imaging, you can put a lot together in a hurry."
Skowronski also recommends reading. Learning as much about the target fish, in his case smallmouth, before even heading to the lake, can be very beneficial. This helps an angler know when and how to apply different techniques in different situations.
