Nicolet College welding program featured in international trade journal
The Welding Journal is distributed to the society's 70,000 members worldwide.
"It's an honor for the welding program and the college to receive that level of coverage and recognition from the leading trade journal in the welding field," Jeff Labs, Nicolet's dean of Trade, Industry and Apprenticeships, said in a press release. "We've made innovative changes to the welding program, which is now highly flexible, self-paced, and designed to fit around students' lives."
The article highlights Nicolet's restructured program that began in January, doing away with traditional semesters and replacing them with a comprehensive series of competencies. When students have mastered all of the competencies, they are awarded one or both of the college's welding technical diplomas.
Recognizing that virtually all students need to work to make money and many also have a family and children, the college infused a great deal of flexibility into the new instructional model, known as Nicolet My Way, the release states.
"Every student sets their own schedule on their own terms," Labs explained. "Instruction is delivered in open labs, where students work one-on-one with expert instructors, and through online course material. When students master one competency, they move on to the next. It's the perfect example of taking a series of small bites to achieve the greater goal of earning a college credential and starting a rewarding welding career."
Students can also receive credit for skills they already have.
"If students already have specific skills that they learned on the job or wherever, they can take an assessment, test out, and move on to the next competency," Labs said. "This alone can significantly speed up the time to graduation."
Students can also start the program at numerous times throughout the year, instead of just twice at the beginning of each semester. The next start date is May 7.
