Drs. Foster & Smith Dog Park grand opening Sept. 30
By Kayla Thomason-
The grand opening of the Drs. Foster & Smith Dog Park, located at Shepard Park on Boyce Drive, is set for noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 30.
"Well, I think it goes without saying that it's been a struggle from the beginning but we are extremely excited as a company to be able to give back to the community," said Patti Berg, manager of the Drs. Foster & Smith retail store.
Berg said she is excited to see the park become a reality. She knows that not all people have the opportunity to let their dogs off-leash in a safe area, and having the dog park will give the four-legged family members good exercise and allow owners to interact and network with other owners.
Drs. Foster and Smith will present a $15,000 check to city officials and Tina Werres of Shepard Dog Park, Inc. at 1 p.m. Saturday to officially signal the park's opening. Dignitaries from the city will also be present and are expected to make short speeches.
A variety of activities are planned during the grand opening including agility demonstrations and field trial demonstrations.
Veterinarians from Drs. Foster & Smith will present educational displays for the public.
Doctors Foster & Smith will also provide cookies, lemonade and water to those in attendance. There will also be treats for the dogs.
The Oneida County Humane Society is bringing some dogs available for adoption.
Werres thanks the community for their continued support for the park.
"I'm ecstatic," she said. "I'm so proud of our community. Everything has come together finally, yes it took us a while but sometimes good things do take a while."
The upper parking lot is for handicapped persons only, others can park in the lower lot or the one across the street.
