"We do well at certain points and then we just shoot ourselves in the foot," coach Kathy Wawrzynowicz said, summing up the problems for her team.
The result was a 3-1 loss to Tomahawk and a 3-0 loss to Mosinee at Mosinee High School which left the Hodags 1-4 in the GNC and on a three-match losing streak overall.
Rhinelander opened with a 25-22, 21-25, 25-17, 26-24 loss to the Hatchets in the first round of the tournament. Wawrzynowicz noted that the Hodags relinquished a 10-point lead in the first game of that match and contended that in the late fourth game Tomahawk illegally subbed libero Delaney Langdon back into the contest after she left briefly with an injury.
"In the end, I disagree with the call that was made and I think that was a crucial point in the match," she said. "But that's how it goes, I guess ... They double subbed. It wasn't right and it shouldn't have been (allowed) but I'm not exactly sure how (it would have affected the match). A yellow card should have been assessed, I know that."
Following a bye in round two, the Hodags were defeated by Mosinee for the second time in five days. Unlike last Tuesday's match, however, the Hodags were not able to take a set from the Indians, falling 25-19, 25-22, 25-18. The closest of the three sets was the second, which was tied at one point 22-22, but Mosinee reeled off the last three points - the final two off attacking errors by Rhinelander's Cami Buchmann.
"We just have to find away to find more confidence I guess," Wawrzynowicz said. "We've just got to keep working. We were with every team. This conference, I think, is really pretty evenly balanced with what happened today. We need to play like we played (in a Sept. 7 win) against Antigo. We can't have a lead and miss two serves in a row. We have to start having some more confidence and start putting the ball away."
Senior Hope Wissbroecker led Rhinelander in most of the statistical categories. She had 33 kills, five aces and four blocks. Her 41 digs on the day were second to libero Stephanie Kuester's 46.
"Hope can't do everything. I know she's trying but she just can't," Wawrzynowicz said. "I need other kids to come through. I know they're trying, but it's just the same old mistakes just over and over and over."
Buchmann and Ally Seefeldt each finished with six kills in the two matches. Makayla Kuester had 28 assists while Seefeldt had 14. Stephanie Kuester, like Wissbroecker, had five service aces on Saturday.
"Our serving, at times, was very good," Wawrzynowicz said. "We have some very good servers, but we also missed some crucial serves."
The Hodags return home tonight to take on Northland Pines. First serve in the varsity match is slated for 7 p.m. at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
