RHS swimmers sink Lakeland 107-63 in GNC opener
Rhinelander had six different winners in the individual races, scored four 1-2 finishes and took all three relays.
Rested on the eve of the first day of classes at RHS, coach Lindsay Byrka said the Hodags used that extra energy to take care of business in the Great Northern Conference dual meet opener.
"We gave them a rest day yesterday to kind of see how they do after a little day off," she said. "I think they responded pretty well, especially in the front half of the meet. We've got to work through the fatigued muscles at the end, but I'm happy with how they did."
Freshman Makenna Winnicki won a pair of individual events for Rhinelander, beating teammate Maddie Quinn by nearly 10 seconds for the win in the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 26.59 seconds) and swimming to a 39-second win over teammate Taylor Macak in the 500 freestyle (5:35:50).
Macak (1:10.41) led a 1-2 finish with Grace Heck in the 100 butterfly while Jenna Hawley (1:19.90) and Ella Schiek went 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke.
"There were a couple of races that we spread them out to go for that solid win, but there were a couple of 1-2s there I was looking for," Byrka said. "I was glad we got our hand on the wall. There were a lot of close races. I really don't think the score was representative of how close the meet actually was. Our girls are getting it done and finishing all the way to the wall. I was happy to see that tonight."
One of those close races was in the 50 freestyle, where Heck (27.36) beat out Lakeland's Kennedy Richards for the win by 0.42 seconds. Marisa McGuire won the 200 freestyle (2:14.05) by a little more than three seconds over Richards.
Rhinelander, which fell to Lakeland in the 200 freestyle relay during a triangular meet at Wausau West Aug. 21, defeated the T-Birds by more than four seconds in the event Thursday. The foursome of Heck, Hawley, McGuire and Winnicki went 1:48.62 in the event, keyed by a 26.36-second split by McGuire in the third leg.
"The whole relay did nice. That's the fastest we've gone this year. That's a good starting off point," Byrka noted.
Lisa Kennedy, Marissa Martin, Macak and Hawley took the 200 medley relay (2:01.93). McGuire, Heck, Kennedy and Winnicki comprised the winning combination for the Hodags in the 400 freestyle relay (4:06.81).
McGuire added a runner-up finish in the 100 freestyle. Anntaya Corbesia scored Lakeland's lone win of the night in that event.
Rhinelander (1-0 Great Northern) travels to Medford next Thursday.
