The Hodags struggled to get anything going offensively and fell in straight sets to Medford 25-14, 25-15, 25-16 at Raider Hall.
"They played very steady ball," Rhinelander coach Kathy Wawrzynowicz said of Medford. "They had some good hitters and they passed the ball extremely well."
Rhinelander struggled Thursday night in its search to find some steady front row play opposite of senior standout Hope Wissbroecker. Wissbroecker finished the night with 15 kills and three blocks. The rest of the team had four kills and no blocks combined, according to the team's statistics.
"They just out jumped my front row and they were able to tip, hit, do whatever they wanted to because we didn't have a block there and we didn't have the hitting," Wawrzynowicz said.
Rhinelander had early leads in each of the three sets, but struggled once the rotation put Wissbroecker in the back row. She ended up with 13 digs on the night. Libero Stephanie Kuester had 19.
Ally Seefeldt had 19 assists for Rhinelander and the Hodags were 39 of 40 serving on the night.
"I was pleased with our serving. We only missed one serve all night long, but Hope was the only one who got any block kills, so once again when she's in the back row, we really struggled," Wawrzynowicz said. "We were on the defensive and you could see that when Steph and Hope are in double digits in digs. I guess that's what we have right now."
Wawrzynowicz said the team is trying hard to develop more of a presence in the front row with its undersized roster and noted the team would go back to the drawing board Friday ahead of a six-team invite Saturday in Marshfield.
