Rhinelander High School senior Alayna Franson finished one spot shy of her goal, placing 11th Saturday at the WIAA Division 2 state girls' cross country meet in Wisconsin Rapids.
Franson finished with a time of 19 minutes, 47.66 seconds, finishing 6.75 seconds outside the top 10 and a spot on the Division 2 podium at the end of the day.
"Even though I wasn't on the podium, I thought I had a really good race," she said.
Franson was 14th at the one-mile mark, moved up to 11th at the two-mile and was briefly in 10th, before being passed over the final 800 meters.
It was Franson's best finish in three attempts at the state meet.
