A small group of Three Lakes Elementary School students took a unique mode of transportation to school Tuesday morning. The students rode in a Three Lakes Fire Department fire truck as part of the seventh annual Three Lakes Fire Department Ride to School Program.

The program teaches students fire safety and prevention and includes a coloring contest. Each class had its own separate theme and the curriculum builds off of the previous year's lesson.

Winners of the coloring contest, one from each grade, were picked up at their homes and transported to Cindy's Cafe to have breakfast with the firefighters. After the meal they were dropped off at school. Each student also received a $25 gift card.

"The Ride to School program is an excellent outreach program," said coordinator Andy Beach. "We get great support from the school, we get great support from the students and the parents and we get great support from the town as well. Everybody enjoys it and it's a lot of fun."

The program teaches the students valuable lessons about fire safety and they take that knowledge back to their families, Beach noted.

"I think it's very important that we get out to the schools and teach fire safety," he said. "If you get the fire safety to the kids the kids take it home to the parents and the easiest fire to put out is the fire that doesn't start."

Fourth-grader Raqual Gebele loved everything about the program and learned a lot from it.

"I learned about the fire escape plan and when to change the batteries in the smoke detector," she said.

Her brother, Wyatt Gebele, a third grader, enjoyed the ride.

"I like to ride the fire truck," he said.

Christina Gebele, the children's mother, said the children have been on the trucks before but it's always a thrill.

"It's a privilege and it's an honor and they just love it," she said.

Gebele loves the program and what it teaches the children.

"I think it's great because it gets the whole family involved in fire prevention," she explaned. "They come home and remind us that we have to change the batteries in our smoke detectors and we need to make a plan to get outside. We're so thankful for Andy Beach and the whole Three Lakes Fire Department because they're all volunteers and they go all out from running the program to cleaning the trucks so they're all cleaned up and everything. I can't say enough about the whole crew, they're wonderful."
