Children and their families descended on Hanson's Garden Village Saturday for the annual Fall Fest.

The proceeds from the event went to the Rhinelander High School FBLA/DECA chapter, Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes - Northwoods Service Unit and the Rhinelander High School Music Department.

Children enjoyed a corn maze with scavenger hunt, straw bale maze, tractor hayrides to feed the chickens, Kraft Kuddly Kritters petting zoo, apple slingshot, pumpkin bowling, face painting and many other activities.

Erika Brigham and her children enjoyed the event.

"I like it so far," she said, adding that she was volunteering with the Girl Scouts and liked that the event benefited student clubs.

Brigham thought the animals would be the biggest hit for her family.

Tori Brigham, Erika's daughter, is a member of Girl Scout Troop 7297.

"It was fun to be able to help out," she said. "I like helping a lot."

This was her first time volunteering and she said she would do it again next year.

"It's nice because we're able to interact with other people more and that's part of what the Girl Scouts try to do," she said.

Monica Janssen and her family attended for the first time and they also had fun.

"It's great, lots of different things for the kids to do," she said, adding that the corn maze was her children's favorite activity.

Janssen liked that the event benefits school groups and she said she would come again.

Abigail Krueger, vice president of community service for Rhinelander's FBLA/DECA organization, was pleased with how the event turned out.

"I think this event turned out great," she said. "It's really nice to see everyone come out today. It's nice and warm, especially for October."

The club has been participating in Fall Fest for three years, and this year there were some new activities.

"We had some new events this year and they all turned out great," she said. "The kids seemed to really enjoy getting new experiences and enjoying the ones from last year."

Some of the new events included a scarecrow contest which Ripco sponsored and promoted, Girl Scout crafts, and performances by musician David Dall. Children also tested their slingshot skills by shooting apples at targets.

Krueger was thankful that Hanson's gave them the opportunity to volunteer and that the proceeds go to the clubs.

"It's neat that Hanson's donates back to our club for helping out," she said. "We're very grateful and we feel very blessed that they have asked us to come and help out. Not only is it a lot of fun but them donating is also great."

Beth Hanson Wallschlaeger, manager of Hanson's Garden Village, said she was hoped everyone enjoyed the fall day and activities. "We want people to enjoy fall and also it's good for us to let people know that we're out here," she said.

She noted the event gets bigger every year and the partnership with the clubs is very beneficial for both parties. "We couldn't do it without them, that's why a lot of the proceeds are going towards them helping us," she said.

Sue Hanson, co-owner of Hanson's Garden Village, was happy that the spotty rain showers didn't deter anyone.

"Even with the rain, people are out," she said. "We're trying to keep the activities for kids to enjoy and parents and grandparents."

The corn maze will remain open during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tractor hayrides will be available Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment for larger groups. Hanson's will close for the season on Oct. 31.
