Rhinelander Girl Scout Skylar Peitsch has found a unique way to help local people in need.

The Rhinelander High School freshman has placed two purple-painted wooden boxes, similar to free lending libraries, at the Rhinelander District Library and Ascension St. Mary's Hospital as part of her Girl Scout Silver Project.

"We didn't know what we were going to do so we went onto Pinterest and were looking through stuff and we found that people were doing the same concept in their communities but with food and we didn't think that would work so we decided to do hygiene products," she explained.

The boxes are stocked with items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, deodorant and lotion, donated by area dentists, hotels, other troop leaders and family. Peitsch will refill the boxes as needed.

Anyone in need can take items from the boxes.

"There are some people who can't get access to this stuff," Peitschsaid. "I just hope that it helps them out in some way and they know that it is here and in my other location."

Peitsch said it took her two to three months to make the boxes and she had some assistance from her dad. She was grateful the hospital and the library accepted them.

In the Girl Scouts there are bronze, silver and gold projects. Peitsch's bronze project was the flowerbed at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.

"They are each a project that's supposed to help out your community in some way and they're supposed to have a long-term effect," she said.

Peitsch said she learned a valuable lesson from the box project.

"I learned that there's so many different ways you can help your community and stuff and different things you can do," she said.

Holly Peitsch, mother and troop leader, loved her daughter's project.

"I think it's awesome, I love that it's a reflection of her, she literally did all the contacting and everything from start to finish and so to see it through to completion is pretty cool," she said.

Peitsch is thankful for the community's help with the donations.

"We want to thank the community for their support in her completing this project," Holly Peitsch said.
