A variety of games are planned for both dogs and their owners. For example, dogs will bob for hot dogs while owners will bob for apples. There will also be a scavenger hunt, a costume contest, a pleasant nighttime Glow Walk and more.
"Bark in the Dark, in a Halloween theme, provides us some additional activities with seasonal games and costumes," said Diane Geis, senior community development manager for the northern region of The American Cancer Society. "The Glow Walk is a nice way to remember loved ones, human and pet, that we have lost to cancer or to celebrate those who have battled cancer and are still with us."
Prizes for the winners of the games and contests include Biscuits in a Jar, toys and other goodies.
Dandy Dog will be doing nail trimmings and Casey Rustan from Foxwood Artistry can take photos. Pet owners can choose either a Harvest theme or Victorian gothic-style photograph. Both the nail trimmings and photographs are available with a minimum donation.
There will also be glow necklaces for the dogs and their owners to wear to make them more visible during the walk. There will also be several raffle baskets with dog-related themes. The 2018 calendars will also be for sale. Dogs who have had photos taken at previous Bark events may be included in the calendar.
Cookies, dip, chips, water, punch and other refreshments will be available.
Preregistration is $15 per dog with owner, $10 for an additional dog.
Registration on the day of the event starts at 5:30 p.m. and will be $20 per dog and owner, $15 for an additional dog.
With the registration fee, participating dogs will receive little treat bags and bandanas. Owners will receive a Bark for Life T-shirt.
Those registering or signing in the day of the event can do so starting at 5:30 p.m.
This is a fundraiser for the regional Relay For Life of the Northwoods event, which takes place annually at Northland Pines High School and includes Oneida, Forest and Vilas County participants. Funds raised during Bark in the Dark go to the American Cancer Society.
"Bark For Life is a way to engage people in fighting back against cancer," Geis said. "We see different people at the Bark events than at a typical Relay For Life event. We all love our dogs and this is also a great way to spend some time with our pets and others who love or have dogs. It's fun and we are helping raise funds for a good cause at the same time."
