"It was great to be able to finish fifth against much bigger and older teams," JWMS swim coach Marna Winnicki said.
The Hodags had four swimmers medal and/or earn ribbons for placing in the top six in individual or relay events.
Sixth-grader Abi Winnicki was the runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle (2 minutes, 11.91 seconds) and finished third in the 50 butterfly). Noelle St. Pierre finished third in the 50 freestyle (27.68) and sixth in the 50 breaststroke (36.40). Maria Heck placed sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:20.59).
Those three, along with Sierra Woodford, recorded a pair of top-five finishes in relay races. The quartet placed fourth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:57.01) and fifth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:17.16).
Heck added a ninth-place finish for JWMS in the 100 freestyle (1:04.93) while the relay team of Ella Cordy, Hannah Rumney, Claire Caselton and Abigale Johnson placed ninth in the 200 medley relay (2:30.05)
"Very proud of all the girls. Hardest I've see them all swim this year with many personal bests," Marna Winnicki noted. "Shoutout to Whitley Devine for her personal best in the 50 freestyle."
Five members of this year's team - Heck, Woodford, St. Pierre, Rumney and Emily Tinsman - will be moving on to the high school ranks next year.
"Next year we will be a young team, but we gave great girls willing to step up and lead the team," Winnicki said.
