The Rhinelander Northwoods Composite mountain bike team was at full strength for the first time this season on Sunday, and it showed in the results of the fourth Wisconsin High School Cycling League race of the season.

The Hodags posted a season-best tie for sixth place in the 38-team Division 2 standings in the Hayward Hustle, hosted at the Seeley OO Trailhead near Cable.

Junior Bridger Flory returned to the lineup, after missing most of the season with a lower leg injury, and placed 10th in the junior varsity boys' Division 2 category with a time of 1 hour, 10 minutes, 22.50 seconds over the three-lap race.

He was one of four Hodags in the boys' JV D2 race. Freddy Wisner finished 24th (1:18:51.46), Hunter Bachmann was 30th (1:28:42.66) and Garrett Bachmann was 35th (1:37:39.45).

On the girls' side, Lakeland sophomore Johanna Craig was the runner-up Sunday, covering two laps in 55:03.20. Alexis Pyrchalla rode to a sixth-place finish in the JV girls' class (1:28:53.25) while teammate Emma Hjelle finished eighth (1:34:45.27).

The Hodags had five racers compete in the one-lap middle school competitions. Jakob Craig won the eighth-grade boys' race (25:59.93), Megan Lester was second in the eighth-grade girls' division (30:56.24), with teammate Sage Flory close behind in fourth (32:06.08). Joey Belanger finished 12th in the sixth-grade boys' class (36:05.03), while Gavin Denis finished 16th in the sixth-grade boys' class.

The RNC team will complete the 2017 WHSCL season with the state championships Sunday, Oct. 22 at Iola Winter Sports Club in Iola. The Hodags will enter that race eighth place overall in the Division 2 team standings. Individually, Johanna Craig is tied for first in the sophomore girls' division; Pyrchalla and Hjelle are fifth and seventh, respectively, in the JV girls' class; and Wisner is the Hodags' top racer in boys JV D2, sitting 19th in the overall standings.
