A semifinalist on season six of "The Voice" will perform Thursday at the Three Lakes Center for the Arts.

Kat Perkins of North Dakota will take the stage at 7 p.m.

"I'm so excited, my first maiden voyage (to Three Lakes)," she said. "The upcoming performance is going to be a little bit different than normal."

It'll be an acoustic performance of songs performed on "The Voice" as well as original tunes. She will also do some storytelling and audience interaction.

"It's more of an intimate performance as opposed to a big giant rock show, which we love to do too, but this is going to be a lot different and really personal for me, so that's exciting," Perkins said, adding that music has always been a part of her life.

"I started singing when I was like 3 years old and I don't remember a time when I wasn't singing," she said, adding that her father was in a band and she idolized him.

She has been performing professionally since she was about 15 years old.

One day producers from "The Voice" asked her to audition for the show.

"My initial reaction was I was a little bit too scared," she said. "I didn't know if I wanted to do it. I didn't know if I was good enough, all this self-doubt."

She was a nanny at the time, and the children she was caring for gave her confidence, so she went with it.

"It was very surreal every week to watch it go from 250 people at the blind auditions to down to - I remember looking around the room one time when there were was 10 of us around and of course the semi-finals when there was five of us left - and it was very surreal 'I can't believe we're the top five out of this entire process,'" Perkins explained.

She thought it was cool that a lot of people from the Midwest supported her.

"I had always had these big hopes and dreams of being very successful and being on a platform this big and all of that, but I never really was prepared," she said. "Every single day it's still very surreal. It's something that I had always worked for but it happened so quickly so it's very shocking and I'm still trying to find my new normal but of course I wouldn't trade it for the world because all my hard work has really paid off."

In 2016 she created Rising Star Camp, her own four-day music camp.

At camp, children get performance and vocal coaching and can take dance and acting classes.

There are also marketing and music business workshops, a personal photo shoot, breakout performances every night around the campfire, as well as optional activities such as hiking, swimming and golfing.

Perkins said she modeled the camp after a camp she attended at the age of 17.

"It changed my perspective on performing for a living and doing it professionally and I got to surround myself with a bunch of kids that wanted to do the same thing, very like-minded people," she said. "So I wanted to create that environment for kids myself and be able to create an opportunity for kids to perform, for them to learn and for them to just be around like-minded people that have the same passion."

After learning that some families were struggling to pay for their children to attend the camp she created the Rising Star Foundation, which launched Sept. 1, 2017.

Those interested in the camp should visit www.katperkins.com. Registration for camp starts after Jan. 1.

The scholarships are available after Jan. 1, at www.risingstarfoundation.org.
