The event was an opportunity for the Nordic ski team's to practice drills and showcase their sport before the upcoming winter sport season.
Twenty athletes ranging from fourth to 10th grade participated in the biathlon. In lieu of skiing, the athletes had to run with their ski poles and perform several Nordic ski drills and obstacles before entering the target range.
Once in the target range, the athletes were permitted only five shots at five targets using an air-compressed paintball marker. For each miss on a target the athlete had to run into a penalty zone and jump the same number of hurdles as their target misses. If an athlete contacted all five targets they were able to sprint past the penalty zone. This twist to a typical relay race provided excitement and a fun viewing experience for the parents attending.
Rhinelander Middle School Nordic Coach, Jim Wood stated the biathlon provided the athletes with an opportunity to get together as a team and practice their Nordic ski skills on dryland while still having fun with the addition of shooting paintballs.
Wood stated that the updated trail system at CAVOC is providing the team with new opportunities for training year round. Coach Wood wanted to thank the School District of Rhinelander for approving the use of school property to the students for this Nordic activity.
Official winter practice for the Nordic ski team will begin in early November.
