Plans for the renovation and expansion of the Demmer Library are moving forward, with construction to begin in spring 2018. The library's Design and Construction Committee (DCC), working with architects Jon Rynish and Jody Andres from Hoffman Design and Construction Inc., is meeting weekly to finalize the design details, library officials said in a press release.

"We've talked about this for so long," says Vicki Reuling, chair of the DCC, "and now it's finally happening."

To achieve its goal of better service for its patrons, the new Demmer will have a revised floor plan that relieves overcrowding and makes the entire library handicap-accessible, the release states. There will be more public computers, three quiet study rooms, and better lighting. Unseen but significant upgrades to electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems will result in a more efficient and maintenance-free building.

One brand new feature is a dedicated "maker space." library director Erica Brewster explained.

"This will add an exciting new dimension to library services," she said. "We can work with the theater, the school's fab lab, and other community organizations to bring hands-on learning and drop-in activities to the Demmer."

Also new is the library's partnership with its neighbor, the Three Lakes Historical Society and Museum. The northwest corner of the building, facing the Johnson House, will provide the society with space for year-round visitor information, historical exhibits, and climate-controlled storage.

While the Demmer is upgrading and modernizing, some things will remain the same. There will still be a bright and lively children's room and a cozy Northwoods Room with a fireplace.

"We want to keep the Northwoods feel of the old Demmer, but adapt it to the changing information environment," Reuling said.

The library has announced it will not be able to accept book, video, or CD donations until after the renovation is complete. Space will be limited when construction begins, leading to this decision. After the renovation, the Demmer Library will resume accepting donated books and more.

Construction is scheduled to begin in spring, 2018. During construction, the library building will be cleared out, and a temporary location will be utilized. With limited available space during the renovation, there will be no room available to store and process donated materials or to hold a book sale. A final book sale to clear out current inventory will be held prior to construction, with the exact date to be determined.

"The Demmer Library has been very fortunate to have so supportive of a community, contributing many items to the library's collection and to the book sales held throughout the year," library officials said in a press release. "The staff and volunteers each offer heartfelt thanks to the community. After the completion of the renovation, the Demmer Library will gladly resume accepting donated items."
