After a rough start to the 2017-18 season, there's nowhere for the Rhinelander High School girls' basketball team to go but up.

Hannah Meverden led four Tigers in double digits as Marshfield routed the Lady Hodags 61-25 Tuesday night at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.

Marshfield (1-1, 0-0 Wis. Valley) closed the first half with a 34-10 run and led by 25 points at the break. A 13-0 spurt over the first 6:33 of the second pushed the lead to 38. The Tigers finally went up by 40, and invoked the running clock rule, with 4:17 to play.

"They outplayed us in every aspect of the game," Rhinelander coach Ryan Clark said. "I wish we would have competed a little better, a little more confidence on offense, looking to attack. But we can show the kids this on film and go from there."

An undersized Hodag lineup struggled with a Marshfield starting five that checked in at 5-foot-6 or taller. The 6-foot Meverden got her 14 points on 5 of 8 shooting and twice blocked Rhinelander 5-3 point guard Kenedy Van Zile in the first half.

Marshfield as a team shot 53 percent from the floor (24 of 45) while holding the Hodags to 27.5 percent (11 of 40). The Tigers out-rebounded Rhinelander 33-19.

"It bothered us," Clark said of Marshfield's height. "I don't think we had anything that was easy. Early on we got blocked a few times and they contested a couple shot, then we got hesitant to attack. Then we had some ugly-looking shots from the outside and we got hesitant to shoot it. Halfway through the first half we just started standing around the perimeter. We looked very timid."

The Hodags hung with Marshfield over the opening five minutes, trailing 6-5 with 13:17 left in the first. Marshfield went on an 18-2 run from there and never looked back. Meg Bryan added 13 points for the Tigers, Jenna Jakobi had 12 and Katie Osinski chipped in 10.

As promised, Rhinelander had more balanced scoring in the season opener after graduating 20-point-per-game scorer Kaly Kostrova. There just weren't many points to go around. Kenedy Van Zile finished with six points on 3 of 11 shooting. Brooke Mork and Molly Wagler each had four. Ally Seefeldt, who averaged 11 points per game in Great Northern Conference play last year, was held to three points on 1 of 11 shooting.

"I thought Brooke Mork, at the end, started to attack pretty well," Clark noted. Maddie Meyer, she didn't make the shots, but she attacked. We've got to get little Ally to attack, but their length gave us troubles all night long."

The Hodags (0-1, 0-0 Great Northern) took on Wausau East Friday night in the first day of the Tom Kislow Memorial Tournament in Wausau, which took place after deadline. Rhinelander plays Cadott this afternoon to conclude the invite.

"I think they'll be excited to get right back on the floor," Clark said.
