Hodag girls' swim team hands out awards at year-end banquet
In keeping with the tradition of the past couple of seasons, first-year coaches Jenny Heck and Marna Winnicki handed out four separate awards but not a most valuable swimmer award.
"This team, it took each and every one of these swimmers to get to where we wanted to be," Heck explained. "Without any one of them, we probably wouldn't have been second at conference. We probably would have been third. It was that close. We needed everybody to go best times, beat the person next to them and swim what they needed to swim for us to get second, and that's what they did."
The team did hand out a high-point award, which went to freshman Makenna Winnicki. As the name suggests, Winnicki scored the most points in competition for the team this season, compiling 410.5 points between individual an relay events.
Another freshman, Ella Schiek, won the team's most improved swimmer award.
"We put her in backstroke at the end of the season and IM," Heck noted. "Whatever she did, she got best times at conference and sectionals. She really did a great job at the end of the season and tapered well."
The team's Hodag Award went to sophomore Marisa McGuire. Alexis Denny won the team's spirit award.
The Hodags went 5-1 in Great Northern Conference play, finished second at the conference meet and fifth at the WIAA sectional meet, while qualifying for state in two events.
Heck and co-coach Marna Winnicki took over during the middle of the season following Lindsay Byrka's resignation. Winnicki thanked the team, and their parents, for their support during the transition.
"It was different than any one of us had planned in the beginning, but it was really nice knowing that Jenny and I had the support of not only the swimmers but the parents. I really appreciate that," she said.
