In order to do that in a safe and effective manner, 12 people enrolled in and recently completed the basic heavy equipment operator program offered through Nicolet College.
Along with basic equipment operation and different earth-moving techniques, the nearly 100 hours of training included electromechanical fundamentals, site preparation and grading, transporting equipment, and flagging, according to a Nicolet press release.
The program was created through a collaborative effort between Nicolet, the Lac du Flambeau Tribe and the Sokaogon Chippewa Community.
The students were selected through a competitive application process with scholarships provided by the Tribal Labor Advisory Committee, which seeks to enhance and expand Native American job opportunities on Wisconsin Department of Transportation projects.
Several area companies worked with Nicolet to provide field-based instruction and technical expertise.
These included Ponsse North America, Musson Brothers, and CrossTrac Forestry Equipment (formerly Pioneer Equipment) in Rhinelander, Nortrax in Merrill, and Enterprise Forest Products in Enterprise.
