There was no debating the award winners - virtually all of the teams honors are based on regular season statistics. Zach Olds won the Schoppe Family Award as the team's most valuable player. Gunnar Millot, a member of the Schoppe family, won the Jim Johnson Award as the team's most improved player.
Olds won the Schoppe Award with an 86.17 scoring average this year, just ahead of sophomore teammate Nick Twite (87.54). Twite won the team awards for most fairways (7.85) and greens (5.92) hit in regulation per round. Olds was also named the team's captain.
"Nick and Zach were really close, they were like one or two strokes (apart) on their average," Hodag coach Adam Schmidt said. "Those two kind of battling back and forth for the No. 1 spot all year long."
Millot's scoring average improved nine strokes from last year, helping him earn the Johnson Award. He was one of two seniors honored at the banquet. The other was Matt Reinthaler, who won the team's putting award with 32.83 putts per round.
The Hodags won two meets this year, finished third in the Great Northern Conference standings and finished seventh in a WIAA Division 1 regional held last Tuesday at Northwood.
"Next year, there's no reason why we can't do a whole lot better, but golf's one of those individual sports where you've got to put in the time," Schmidt said. "Over the summer you've got to hit balls, got to go out and play and then work on getting stronger. Being able to do that is really going to be key."
Having Olds and Twite, the team's two best golfers this year, back for another season will definitely help in 2018, Schmidt said.
"I talked to them yesterday and they're both loving it. They're going to practice and play (this summer) because they want to get better at it. It's great to see the drive and the will to succeed and the want to succeed," he said.
JV awards
In addition to being named the varsity's most improved player, Millot was the Hodag junior varsity golf team's most valuable player. The remainder of the JV awards - most improved, putting, fairways and greens - went to freshman Devon Gaber.
The Hodags won three Great Northern Conference JV matches and placed second in three other matches this season.
"As of right now, we're looking pretty good for next year. There's a lot of young kids coming to play, which is good," Schmidt said.
