Memorial Day is meant to honor those men and women who died in service to the U.S. armed forces. In recognition of this important holiday, cemetery services and ceremonies will be held in the Rhinelander area.

Ceremonies will be held Monday morning at four cemeteries:

- 8 a.m., VFW Honor Guard at Newbold Cemetery.

- 8:30 a.m., AmVets/American Legion Honor Guard at Northland Memorial Park.

- 9 a.m., VFW Honor Guard at Forest Home Cemetery.

- 9:30 a.m., AmVets/American Legion Honor Guard at Nativity of Our Lord Cemetery.

Later in the day, beginning at 11 a.m., the John and Dori Brown Performing Arts Center (formerly the Rhinelander High School Auditorium) will host a more extensive ceremony.

The ceremony will open with the VFW/AmVets Honor Guard Posting the Colors, the RHS Show Choir performance of "The Star Spangled Banner" and the pledge of allegiance, organizers said in a press release. After an invocation by Paster Ken White, the RHS Band will perform "Eternal Father." Emcee Tammy Walters, Oneida County Veterans Service Officer, will then make opening remarks. There will be several other speakers and performances.

Guest speaker Ken Grant serves as division administrator of the Division of Veterans Services. He oversees the division's services which include the Milwaukee Claims Office, State Approving Agency, Outreach Section and the Veterans Homeless Program.

Grant is a retired Army veteran who enlisted as a private and retired as a lieutenant colonel with 25 years of military service. His service includes serving as a helicopter crew chief on Huey Helicopters, various infantry, ordinance, recruiting and personnel leadership assignments in Europe and while serving with the Wisconsin Army National Guard.
