Track: Hodags set personal records at GNC meet
The boys' team managed to place sixth out of seven teams, an improvement from finishing seventh last year.
Meanwhile the girls' team placed seventh. Both teams saw numerous athletes post personal best times.
Boys
The Hodags had numerous young runners score points in the meet.
The headliner was A.J. Kopplin placing third in the high jump with a leap of 5-feet-8, while Peyton Erickson took fourth in the triple jump.
Freshman Chase Hunt posted a pair of fifth-place finishes. Hunt ran the 100-meter dash in 12.18 seconds and the 110 hurdles in 18.20.
Another freshman, Drake Martin, had a seventh-place finish in the long jump, while Daniel Ritchie placed eighth in the 800 with a time of 58.56.
"We have a lot of freshman that are scoring points, getting into finals and stuff like that," RHS head coach Chris Ferge said. "It's been impressive over the year because we're so young and now we have another week before regionals so we're looking for people to PR. A lot of people PRed for me, for the guys that I coached. Throwers all PRed pretty much. We're working on pole vault, I think that's going to come along. I'm excited to put our best team out there, we lost one of our runners in the 4x100. Josh Francisco was not here today. That was a blow to our team."
Francisco, who was projected to place in the 100-meter dash, was absent from school. It was not disciplinary, according to Ferge.
Girls
While the Lady Hodags came in last place in the team standings, many girls came away with personal records.
Junior Lexie Rick had a strong showing in the throwing events.
Rick placed third in the discus with a throw of 96 feet, while finishing fourth in the shot put with a throw of 31-feet-11.5.
Ellen Padgett also placed in two events, running the 100 meters in 13.53 seconds to place fourth, while finishing eighth in the 200 with a time of 28.72.
Valerie Dalka placed sixth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 14:31.32.
The 4x800 relay team of Payton Hartman, Gracie Quinn, Lisa White and Jade Forster finished fourth, while setting a personal best time of 11:14.25 in the process.
"We just keep improving our times," RHS girls' coach Brittany Haakenson said. "It's good to see those girls come through."
The Hodags compete Monday in a WIAA Division 1 regional at Wausau East.
