The toughest course in the Great Northern Conference lived up to its reputation on Friday.

Rhinelander posted its highest score of the season in conference play, a 366, but still managed to finish third in the fifth leg of the Great Northern Conference meet hosted by the Hodags at Northwood Golf Course.

Only 10 of the 35 golfers in the field broke 90 on Northwood's tight, par-72 layout.

"It is a real tough course," Hodag coach Adam Schmidt said. "Historically, they don't play as well here and it's was just a tough day today. We still came out third. That was good. The boys, they had some good nines. They had some really good holes and have some holes they've got to work on."

Nick Twite managed his round the best, working around three double bogeys and a triple to shoot 87 and finish in a three-way tie for sixth. He made a triple on the par-4 fifth be rebounded with a birdie on the sixth.

Matt Reinthaler was a shot behind his teammate and, with a tie for ninth, was the last player to earn conference points on the day. He made a 9 on the sixth-hole was he went out in 48, but turned it around on the back with birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 to shoot 40 on the inward half.

Joseph Schmitz, golfing in the fifth position, shot 93. Zach Olds shot 98 and Will England carded a 102.

"It was a rough day for all the kids," Schmidt said. "They had a hard time keeping it out of the woods. It was just a rough day. There were some kids that shot some good scores and we just struggled. But a lot of kids struggled, it was tough today."

The one who kept it out of trouble the best was Medford's Spenser Scholl, who shot a 2-over par round of 74 to earn medalist honors. He was the only golfer to break 80 Friday.

The Raiders shot 336 to win the leg by 18 strokes over Lakeland. Medford leads Lakeland by two points in the conference standings with two rounds remaining. Rhinelander is third, six points out of third.

Individually, Scholl's win put him back atop the individual conference standings by a point over Mosinee's John Birnbaum who tied for second (83) Friday. Currently the Hodags have four golfers in all-conference position with 36 holes remaining: Olds (7th), Reinthaler (8th), Twite (11th) and England (15th).

Rhinelander traveled to Merrill Saturday for the annual Bluejay Best Ball invitational. Numerous attempts to reach Schmidt over the weekend for scores and comments were unsuccessful.

Lakeland hosts the sixth leg of the GNC tournament Tuesday at Timber Ridge Golf Club in Minocqua.
