The Rhinelander High School golf team posted a solid round Tuesday in the fourth leg of the Great Northern Conference tournament but couldn't match the low scores being turned in by other teams at Bass Lake Country Club in Deerbook.

The Hodags shot 347, which would have put them in contention to win most legs of the GNC so far this season. On Tuesday, that score was only good enough for fourth in the seven-team field. Medford won the meet, shooting 323. Mosinee's John Birnbaum was medalist with a 1-over par round of 72.

"The other teams definitely came to play," Rhinelander coach Adam Schmidt said. "The kid from Mosinee, Birnbaum, shot 72. You just can't take that away. He played awesome. Medford, those guys really came to play. 323, that's pretty awesome. Lakeland (second, 336) had some kids that played really well."

Rhinelander posted three rounds in the 80s and two in the lower 90s, but Schmidt said the team also had a few blow up holes along the way. Each player on Rhinelander's five-man team had at least three scores of double bogey or worse on their scorecard.

That included Nick Twite. The sophomore made a quadruple-bogey 9 on the par-5 fourth hole, but rebounded to shoot 82 and finish in seventh place overall Tuesday.

"Nick shot 82 with a 9. That's quite a comeback. You take a 9 and then to shake it off (is impressive). He went like par, birdie and then the rest pars (on the front nine)," Schmidt said. "That was pretty awesome."

Zach Olds and Matt Reinthaler both shot matching 87s, finishing in a tie for 12th, three strokes outside the top 10.

"Zach was fighting the shanks," Schmidt said. "He was struggling. He just didn't have that Zach Olds confidence he usually has and it really kind of hurt him. He still shot 87, which isn't a terrible round, but I think he said he had three triples. He just said he really struggled.

"I looked at Matt's scorecard and the first eight holes he played he had some 7s. He started on hole 4 and started with a 7. He had a couple of high numbers in there and those big numbers, you get a bunch of them and they really take that round that could have been 81, 82 and those strokes add up pretty quick."

Gunnar Millot, in his first conference meet on varsity, shot 91. Will England shot 94.

The results dropped Rhinelander four points behind Medford in the GNC standings. Lakeland is second in the conference, one point behind the Raiders. Zach Olds dropped to seventh in the individual conference standings, Reinthaler sits eighth and Nick Twite jumped up to 10th.

The Hodags host the fifth leg of the conference tournament Friday at Northwood Golf Course.

"We're looking forward to some good scores," Schmidt said. "Historically speaking, we don't play all that well at our home course, but I think this year's going to be different. These kids have been playing a lot more. They know it a lot more."
