Food pantry announces third annual pumpkin growing contest

The Rhinelander Area Food Pantry is looking for individuals interested in trying their hand at growing a large pumpkin. The third annual pumpkin growing contest will be held, ending at the Harvest Hoedown event scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 30, according to a RAFP press release. This annual fall celebration benefits the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry and the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing.

Pumpkin growing awards will be presented for two groups, youth (age 16 and under) and adults, and based on a combination of weight, circumference and ripeness, as determined by the judges.

Growers can register when they pick up their free early ripening Autumn Gold Hybrid seeds, (which must be used for this contest) along with a copy of the rules and tips on growing pumpkins. This is all available at Forth Floral, Hanson's Garden Village, CCL Gardens or at the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry (Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon).
