Local skater selected to attend player development camp
Wojtusik was one of only 16 forwards selected during a showcase tournament that featured the top bantam players in the state at the Cornerstone Ice Arena in Green Bay.
The selection process began in February when roughly 130 Bantam level hockey players from all areas of Wisconsin competed at the K.B. Willett Arena in Stevens Point. Players were divided into six teams before taking the ice for the four-hour tryout. Each squad was given ice time to demonstrate their puck handling, passing and skating skills to a panel of coaches. From there, the teams competed in several scrimmages, which provided the scouts a chance to evaluate each player and their abilities in a game situation. The field was then narrowed to 64 players who would advance to participate at the Bantam Festival in Green Bay on April 29 and 30.
The 64 players who advanced to the Festival were divided into four teams for a round robin style tournament. Each team had two games the first day with a wrap up game that followed on Sunday. Wojtusik had a goal and an assist during the tournament as his team went 1-1-1.
"Harlan's physical play, passing abilities and instinctive hockey impressed the scouts enough to earn him one of the coveted 16 spots awarded to the top forwards in the state and an advancement to the USA Hockey Central District Select 14 Camp in Ames, Iowa," Wojtusik's father, Mike, said.
This year the camp will feature 102 select players from the Central District and will be held June 18-23. Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska represent the Central District. The camp, which will be directed by Iowa State's coach, Dr. Al Murdoch, is designed for qualified and notably motivated hockey players. The program boasts intensive on-ice instruction emphasizing advanced skating techniques, individual and team skills as well as games. Specialized off-ice classroom sessions and dorm living are additional elements of the camp that will allow for an overall unique experience for camp attendees.
While at camp, players will also be evaluated by the USA Hockey National office/Player Development coaching staff. Player evaluations will be recorded and maintained at the national office for future national camp considerations.
Wojtusik also skates for the Northern Wisconsin Blizzards and the Rhinelander Ice Association Bantams, which this year won consolation championship at the WAHA Bantam 3A State Tournament.
Wojtusik's grandparents are Bob and Joey Wojtusik of Three Lakes and Harlan and Phyllis Fausch of Irma.
