Hartman, Swanson place at youth state wrestling meet
Hartman, an eighth-grader wrestling in the boys' 2002-03, 145-pound weight class, took fifth in his 16-boy bracket. Swanson, a sixth-grader wrestling in the girls' 2002-04, 172-pound class, placed sixth.
Hartman won his first two matches in the tournament to assure himself a spot in the placement rounds. He lost to Corbin Hauser by 4-0 decision in the semifinals, and 8-2 in the consolation semis to Javon Leisgang, but rebounded in the fifth-place match with a 9-3 decision over Tyr Severson.
Swanson received a bye into the quarterfinals in her nine-girl bracket, where she defeated Lilianne Sullivan by major decision, 10-2. Swanson lost by pin in her final three matches.
Autumn Pond was the only other Hodag to win a match at the state tournament. The eighth-grader went 2-2 in the girls' 2002-04, 105-pound class with a pair of pins to her credit. She was stopped by Calli Storms 6-0 in a match to determine who would make her way into the placement rounds.
Aiden Ostermann (boys 2006-07, 72), Owen Kurtz (boys 2004-05, 130) and Ashley Schmidt (girls' 2005-07, 85) also competed. All three wrestlers went 0-2 in their brackets.
