Two Rhinelander Wrestling Club members, Walker Hartman and Abby Swanson, placed last weekend at the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation Kids Folkstyle state meet held at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.

Hartman, an eighth-grader wrestling in the boys' 2002-03, 145-pound weight class, took fifth in his 16-boy bracket. Swanson, a sixth-grader wrestling in the girls' 2002-04, 172-pound class, placed sixth.

Hartman won his first two matches in the tournament to assure himself a spot in the placement rounds. He lost to Corbin Hauser by 4-0 decision in the semifinals, and 8-2 in the consolation semis to Javon Leisgang, but rebounded in the fifth-place match with a 9-3 decision over Tyr Severson.

Swanson received a bye into the quarterfinals in her nine-girl bracket, where she defeated Lilianne Sullivan by major decision, 10-2. Swanson lost by pin in her final three matches.

Autumn Pond was the only other Hodag to win a match at the state tournament. The eighth-grader went 2-2 in the girls' 2002-04, 105-pound class with a pair of pins to her credit. She was stopped by Calli Storms 6-0 in a match to determine who would make her way into the placement rounds.

Aiden Ostermann (boys 2006-07, 72), Owen Kurtz (boys 2004-05, 130) and Ashley Schmidt (girls' 2005-07, 85) also competed. All three wrestlers went 0-2 in their brackets.
