Laurie Schlitt, chief executive officer (CEO) of the YMCA of the Northwoods, will soon be taking on a new challenge as executive director of the Mukwonago YMCA, the organization announced this week.

"Laurie's resignation will be effective on April 30 as she will begin the next phase of her career on May 1," according to a YMCA press release.

Schlitt has had nearly a decade-long career with the YMCA of the Northwoods.

She raised membership 14 percent in her first year as membership director, the release states. She also grew the annual campaign events over 25 percent as associate executive director. Other developments under Schlitt's leadership include increasing board member participation, restructuring group fitness classes to provide flexibility to participants, increasing membership after lowering dues, and opening the gymnastics studio, the release states.

Schlitt also oversaw a successful new branding transition and strong collaborations with area organizations and corporations. Schlitt credits the staff and volunteers at the Y who are able to exemplify the mission and values to make all feel welcome.

She served as interim CEO after Chris Francis' departure in 2011 creating a successful transition for the new CEO. She also served as interim CEO for a two-year period ending in March 2015 at which time she was hired as CEO. During her tenure as interim CEO and CEO, Schlitt assessed and prioritized the needs of the organization, and created and implemented impact focused initiatives that have led to growth of the YMCA of the Northwoods, the release states.

"She took over in a time of adversity and united the staff to believe in a vision of stronger community with a strategic plan to ensure the Y became a community center for years to come," the release states. "She stressed the importance of community impact and doing so increased collaborative partners with local organizations. Since joining the Northwoods community her involvement has included Kiwanis, Women's Club, MOCK, Partners In Education, Leadership Oneida County, and other various volunteer projects."

According to YMCA President Shane Sparks, "Laurie approached every day with passion, pride, and great integrity. We will miss Laurie and the enthusiasm she brought to the YMCA and wish her the best as she accepts a new challenge and returns closer to home. Here, we look forward to identifying the next dynamic leader who will continue the YMCA on its upward trajectory."

The YMCA of the Northwoods, with support from Y-USA, is beginning the process of hiring a new CEO.

Toni Jaskowiak will serve as interim CEO during this process, the release notes.

"As president and now past-president, I have observed Laurie's incredible passion and dedication to the mission of the Y," added Dr. Wendy Henrichs. "She is a forward thinker, cultivating a culture of creativity and prosperity that is wrapped by excellence. Laurie has become an impactful leader of her staff, the organization and our community. She has been an asset to the YMCA of the Northwoods and will be missed. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we would like to thank Laurie for her service to our Y and our community. We wish she would stay, but wish her the very best as she moves on to new challenges as Mukwonago Executive Director ..."
