Sadauskas honored by Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers
The Friend of Science Education Award is awarded annually to recognize outstanding contributions to the support of science teachers by individuals, groups, corporations, or foundations, etc., outside the science education community, according to WSST press release.
Sadauskas has been working with school groups, community members and lake associations throughout Oneida County since she was hired in 2011 as the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Coordinator, the release states.
Sadauskas has participated in Eco-Trek, where local students learn about aquatic invasive species for a day. She also works with local school children on an invasive worm monitoring program called "Worm Watch," where students not only learn about invasive worms, but also learn about science, math and the importance of teamwork. She coordinates Clean Boats/Clean Waters and Citizen Lake Monitoring Network workshops where attendees are trained to organize lake inspections, educate boaters about AIS hitchhikers, and how to inspect their boats and trailers. She regularly has invasive species messages on radio and TV to help spread the message. Michele and her staff work with lake associations to monitor lakes and they attend local events (fairs, picnics, and set up at boat landings) where they showcase their AIS See and Touch table.
"Michele has had a direct impact on thousands of youth and adults in her community, according to the WSST press release. "It is clear that she is very passionate about educating people about invasive species and the impact that they play on an ecosystem. She has served as program director on grant- funded activities, and works directly with classroom teachers."
Theresa Werner, a Rhinelander teacher, writes: "(Michele's) knowledge is amazing, her passion is exemplary, and dedication is priceless. With her, the students and staff of numerous school districts are able to continue in our quest to be what we wish for most, life-long learners."
