Man charged in shooting incident in Town of Pelican
By by River News Staff-
A Rhinelander man is in custody following an alleged shooting incident Saturday night in the Town of Pelican.
Officers apprehended Steven Fletcher, 46, in connection with the incident.
According to the Oneida County Sheriff's Office, dispatchers received a report of shots fired at an apartment complex shortly before midnight.
Authorities say preliminary investigation indicates Fletcher was allegedly trying to shoot someone in the apartment complex.
The deputy's report indicated that a single shot was fired inside the alleged victim's apartment before he could disarm Fletcher after a brief struggle.
The firearm allegedly used, along with a shell casing and the bullet, was recovered by deputies.
Fletcher was arrested outside of one of the buildings without incident, taken to Ministry St. Mary's Hospital for a blood draw, then booked into the Oneida County Jail.
Fletcher made an initial court appearance Monday before Branch II judge Michael Bloom on charges of attempted first degree intentional homicide, armed burglary, possession of a firearm while intoxicated and disorderly conduct. He is being held on a $30,000 cash bond.
Sheriff's department Captain Terri Hook said the burglary charge does not stem from Fletcher breaking into the apartment.
"Burglary is entering someplace with the intention of committing a crime," Hook said. "You can walk into an apartment and be charged with burglary if you commit a crime."
Fletcher's will next appear before Bloom on March 20 for an adjourned initial appearance.
If convicted of the attempted homicide charge, Fletcher could be imprisoned for up to 60 years.
