Four Hodags compete at youth swim state championships
Winnicki broke two 30-year-old club records in the 11-12 age group this meet in the 100-yard individual medley (1:09.71) and the 50 freestyle (28.32).
The top eight finishers in individual events or the top three relays earned medals, with ribbons being awarded to the remaining finishers up to 16th place.
Winnicki, 10, placed third in the 500 freestyle (6:04.04), the 100 IM and the 50 free 28.32. She took fourth 100 free (1:02.50) and 200 IM (2:33.57) and sixth in the 200 free (2:20.06).
Antonuk, 12, took sixth in the 200 breaststroke (2:40.87); 10th in the 100 IM (1:08.39) and 100 butterfly (1:06.04); 11th in the 400 IM (5:08.90); 15th in the 500 free (5:46.00) and 17th in the 200 free.
King, 10, took 27th in the 100 backstroke, 32nd 50 butterfly and 47th in the 50 backstroke. Miljevich, 10, was 41st both the 50 and 100 breaststroke and 68th in the 100 IM.
Three of the four also took part in relay races down at the state meet. Winnicki's teams finished fifth in the 200 freestyle and sixth in the 200 medley relay. Antonuk and King each swam on a 200 medley relay team that placed ninth while King was part of a 13th-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay.
RSC head coach Megan Cihla said she was very pleased with her swimmers.
"All four athletes were able to overcome their nerves to swim great races," she said. "You could really see Zacha and Sophia's competitive sides come out and really fight hard against the swimmers in their heat. Sophia had one of the fastest starts among the best of the best in Wisconsin. Zacha's excitement and enthusiasm really shined as I got a thumbs up from him before each event.
"Jack had one of the toughest line-ups and crushed it. Before an event we would talk about the race and things he needed to work on. I would give him really tough challenges and he would walk away and surpass my challenges every time. Abi had the meet of her life. Her competitiveness and drive to win really stood out. This was the first time I've seen her so tired after each event, proving just how much she really wanted it. I couldn't be more proud of these athletes, between all of the hard work they put in during the season to the wonderful accomplishments they had this weekend."
Three Rhinelander swimmers - Thaddeus Heck, David King and Makenna Winnicki - are competing in the 13 and over state meet in Waukesha that runs through Sunday.
Rhinelander Swim Club will be holding a spring session starting April 10 and running for seven weeks. For complete information and registration, please check their website: https://rsc.swimtopia.com.
