Jacob Dreifuerst hit a go-ahead single in the top of the eighth inning and Rhinelander Black held on for a 10-8 win over Rhinelander Green in an intracity battle at Stafford Field.
The back-and-fourth game saw the Green team take the lead thanks to a four-run fourth. Rhinelander Black tied it in the fifth and pulled ahead in the top of the sixth, only to watch the Greenshirts tie it up again in the bottom of the inning. Both teams left the potential go-ahead/winning run stranded in scoring position in the seventh before an eighth inning that featured plenty of offense.
Abe Laggis reached on a one-out error in the eighth. Devyn Orth and Nate Cogar both walked behind him to set the stage for Dreifuerst, who smacked the go-ahead single to left.
Cogar later scored on a wild pitch and Driefuerst scored on a two-out single by Nick Schiek.
The Black team needed those two extra insurance runs following a two-out rally by Rhinelander Green in the bottom of the eighth. Ross Skeen followed Connor Cooper's fielder's choice with a base hit, setting the stage for Harlan Wojtusik, who halved the Black team's lead with a two-run double. Quinn Lamers then singled and Alex Kubeny walked to load the bases, but Jason Huseby struck out to end the game.
Rhinelander Black took the lead in the second, scoring three runs without the aid of a hit or an RBI. Dreifuerst walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Jesse Mahner walked and later scored on an error. Kamerin Resch also walked and scored from third when the Green team threw out Brett Bennis attempting to steal second.
Kubeny hit a sacrifice fly to score Wojtusik in the bottom of the second for the Green team. Doubles by Cogar and Mahner restored Black's three-run cushion in the third.
Rhinelander Green mounted a big rally in the fourth with the bases clear and two out, beginning with a single by Cooper. He stole second, got to third on a wild pitch and scored when Skeen reached on an inning-extending error. Passed balls allowed Skeen and Wojtusik to score and Kubeny singled hime Lamers to give the Greens a 5-4 lead.
Schiek's RBI single in the fifth scored Orth and tied the game. Orth singled home Laggis to give the Blacks the lead in the sixth. Both hits came with two outs.
Payton Johnson was picked off third in a lengthy rundown representing the tying run for the Green team in the sixth, but Cooper rushed to third amid the confusion and scored when the throw back to the base after retiring Johnson sailed into left field.
In a weird quirk, starting pitcher Nate Cogar got the save for Rhinelander Black. Cogar started, went four innings and allowed five unearned runs on three hits with three strikeouts. He came back in the eighth, with nine pitches remaining on his 95-pitch limit, with the bases loaded to get the game-ending strikeout of Huseby. Laggis got the win, pitching 3 2/3 innings of relief. He allowed three runs on six hits.
Wojtusik took the loss for Rhinelander Green in two-thirds of an inning of relief, allowing a pair of hits. Teagan Guckenberg started and walked six batters over two innings. Cooper pitched three innings of relief allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Skeen worked into the eighth, allowing three runs on four hits.
Orth, Mahner and Schiek each had two-hit nights for Rhinelander Black while Cooper and Wojtusik had two-hit nights for Rhinelander Green.
Rhinelander Black (2-8) is at Tomahawk Thursday while Rhinelander Green (3-6) hosts fellow Rhinelander team, Laser Pros International. Rhinelander Green is also home on Friday, taking onāLakeland.
Crandon 13, Rhinelander Black 12
The final game of Rhinelander Black's eight-game slide occurred Monday night when the Blackshirts dropped another extra-inning affair, falling to Crandon 13-12 in nine innings.
Crandon jumped out to an early 9-5 lead, but Rhinelander Black rallied for a run in the fifth, five in the sixth and one more in the sevenths to take the lead. Crandon responded with two runs aided by errors to tie the game in the seventh and won it on a walk-off single in the ninth after the first batter of the inning reached on an error.
Laggis and Cogar each had three hits in the loss. Orth, Mahner, Schiek and Travis Towne had the other hits. Driefuerst took the loss in relief. Mahner and Laggis also pitched for Rhinelander Black in the contest.
Rhinelander Prep 9, Merrill Blue 2
Rhinelander Prep is on the verge of clinching a spot in the Northwoods Babe Ruth Prep League regular season championship game following a 9-2 win over Merrill Blue Tuesday night at Stafford Field.
The Hodags jumped on Merrill Blue for five runs in the first three innings and then tacked on four in the bottom of the sixth before the game was called after reaching the Prep League's two-hour time limit.
Ian Miller put Rhinelander ahead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single that scored Isaac Bixby. Rhinelander tacked on three in the second thanks to a single by Jacob Weddle, three walks, a couple of wild pitches and an RBI groundout by Caleb Shefveland. Jacob Schoppe added an RBI single for Rhinelander in the third.
Merrill got a run in the third, scoring on a wild pitch and another in the sixth drawing a bases loaded walk, but Rhinelander put it away in the bottom of the sixth. Joe Schneider singled to score Miller. Mitch Wolosek, Jackson Laabs and Jake Losch then hit three consecutive RBI singles with two outs in the inning.
Rhinelander ended up with seven hits by seven different players in the contest.
Miller started and went 2 1/3 innings, allowing a run on two hits. Schoppe got the win, striking out four and allowing only one hit in 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Bixby pitched the sixth inning for Rhinelander striking out two and walking three.
