Rhinelander Lions Club helps with disaster relief in Peru
Prompted by club member Milagros Rappley, a native of Peru, the Rhinelander Lions Club reached out to help the residents of Cocachacra, a small village three hours away from Lima.
The Rhinelander Lions Club donated $250, the District Lions Club 27-C2 pitched in another $300 and other local members donated another $300, according to a club press release.
Thanks to the Rhinelander Lions, 75 families in Cocachacra received a basket with basic food necessities such as rice, sugar, oil, noodles, oatmeal, canned milk, tuna, spaghetti sauce and legumes. Approximately 1,000 pounds of food in total.
Rappley asked her friends, family and a local church in Lima to help her with this noble cause "to help others when they need it the most" and arranged all the details to make the delivery of the groceries to the families.
Upon arrival at Cocachacra Village May 13, Milagros, her family and friends were greeted enthusiastically by the church members of this community, according to the release.
In a small ceremony at the church, the families received their food basket and the children also received some goodies.
"We were happy to bring a little joy to the families that have lost everything, due to the natural disasters that have happened in the past few months in this small village," said Rappley.
"The families of this community were very grateful and appreciative to all the people involved in this project and especially to the Rhinelander Lions Club for reaching out from such a great distance."
