Rhinelander led 6-0 at point, but the lead was cut in half before the Hodags came up with three runs in the top of the sixth to prevail, 9-5.
Ian Miller and Joe Schneider hit RBI doubles in the first inning to go up 3-0. Mitchell Wolosek scored on an RBI single by Jake Losch, before Miller added another RBI single in the third and Losch added another RBI on a fielder's choice in the fourth inning to lead 6-0.
Lakeland rallied in the bottom of the fourth, however, earning its first hit of the game and eventually loaded the bases. In total, Lakeland would score three runs in the inning and it appeared as if it was about to get tight.
The hosts would score another run in the fifth and had the bases loaded with two outs, but a Lakeland runner was thrown out by relief pitcher Cole Lehman to end the inning.
Then Rhinelander would put the game away in the top of the sixth.
Miller started the inning by reaching on an error, then stealing second before another error scored him. Jake Schoppe added an RBI single, while Wolosek also had a hit in what turned into a three-run inning.
Lakeland would score once more in the bottom of the sixth but it wasn't enough.
Isaac Bixby earned the win, not allowing a hit or a run in two and a third innings of work. Jacob Weddle allowed three hits, while Lehman gave up four in relief for Rhinelander, which remains in command atop the standings with a record of 10-1.
Merrill Black 9, Rhinelander Black 3
Rhinelander Black hung around for a bit Wednesday as it tried to snap its losing streak, but three big innings proved to be too much to overcome in a 9-3 loss to Merrill Black at Stafford Field.
Rhinelander Black has dropped six straight games after opening the season with a walkoff win over fellow Rhinelander team Laser Pros International.
Merrill salted the game away with four runs in the top of the seventh. They also scored twice in the first and three times in the fifth.
Rhinelander's blackshirts hung around. Jacob Dreifuerst's RBI double made it a 2-1 game in the fourth. Kamerin Resch and Nate Cogar added RBI singles in the fifth and sixth to bring the score within 5-3.
In the end, however, walks and miscues proved to be the Black team's undoing. Four Rhinelander pitchers combined to walk 10 batters in the contest. Five of those walks eventually came around to score. Additionally, only three of Merrill's nine runs were driven in. The rest were the result of wild pitches, passed balls or errors.
Cogar led Rhinelander Black at the plate with a 3-for-3 day, including a double and an RBI. Abe Laggis, Devyn Orth, Dreifurest, Ben Sinclair and Resch added hits for the Blacks.
Cogar was effective in three innings of work, but took the loss, allowing one earned run on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Sinclair gave up one earned run on a hit over 1 2/3 innings. Jesse Maher walked five in 1 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs. Tim Fox finished out the game, allowing a hit and strikeout out a batter in two-third of an inning.
Rhinelander Black (1-6) traveled to Senior League-leading Merrill Red Friday night in a game that concluded after deadline. The team travels to Crandon Monday and takes on Rhinelander Green Tuesday.
Note: The score for the Rhinelander Prep-Merrill Blue Northwoods Babe Ruth League game was initially posted incorrectly on the league's website, therefore we reported in the Saturday, June 17 edition of the River News that Rhinelander Prep lost the game 12-7. Rhinelander actually won the game 12-7, according to league president Brian Young, and sits at 9-1 on the season.
